These reference values must be 245 treated specially in the XML encoding, using the VALUE.REFERENCE 246 tag structure. 247 248 Pegasus had been passing reference values simply as String values. 249 For example, EnumerateInstanceNames returned KEYVALUEs of string 250 type rather than VALUE.REFERENCEs. 251 252 I've modified the XmlReader::getKeyBindingElement() and 253 CIMReference::instanceNameToXml() methods to read and write the 254 XML in the proper format. However, making that change required 255 mike 1.51 that a CIMReference object be able to distinguish between a key 256 of String type and a key of reference type. 257 258 I've modified the String format of CIMReferences slightly to 259 allow efficient processing of references whose keys are also of 260 reference type. The "official" form uses the same encoding for 261 key values of String type and of reference type, and so it 262 would be necessary to retrieve the class definition and look up 263 the types of the key properties to determine how to treat the 264 key values. This is clearly too inefficient for internal 265 transformations between CIMReferences and String values. 266 267 The workaround is to encode a 'R' at the beginning of the value 268 for a key of reference type (before the opening '"'). This allows 269 the parser to know a priori whether the key is of String or 270 reference type. 271 272 In this example: 273 274 MyClass.Key1="StringValue",Key2=R"RefClass.KeyA="StringA",KeyB=10" 275 276 mike 1.51 Property Key1 of class MyClass is of String type, and so it gets 277 the usual encoding. Key2 is a reference property, so the extra 'R' 278 is inserted before its encoded value. Note that this algorithm is 279 recursive, such that RefClass could include KeyC of reference type, 280 which would also get encoded with the 'R' notation. 281 282 The toString() method inserts the 'R' to provide symmetry. A new 283 KeyBinding type (REFERENCE) has been defined to denote keys in a 284 CIMReference that are of reference type. This KeyBinding type must 285 be used appropriately for CIMReference::ttoString() to behave 286 correctly. 287 288 The files that have been modified to make this change are 289 CIMReference.h, CIMReference.cpp, and CIMInstanceRep.cpp. 290 291 A result of this change is that instances names in the instance 292 repository will include this extra 'R' character. Thus, you will 293 need to repopulate your repository when you download the latest 294 CIMOM version. 295 296 Note that for user-facing uses of the String encoding of instance 297 mike 1.51 names (such as might appear in MOF for static association 298 instances or in the CGI client), this solution is non-standard and 299 therefore unacceptable. It is likely that these points will need 300 to process the more expensive operation of retrieving the class 301 definition to determine the key property types. 302 303 36. The new behavior just returns the 332 String value directly with no translation. (Note that 333 CIMValue.toXml() may still be used to get the XML-encoded value.) 334 335 This change was necessary in part to correct the behavior of the 336 repository. CreateInstance stores the instance name returned by 337 CIMInstance.getInstanceName(), which is built using calls to 338 CIMValue.toString(). GetInstance searches for the instance name 339 mike 1.51 without UTF-8 encoding of special characters. For GetInstance to 340 be successful, CreateInstance must have stored the instance name 341 in that same form, without special character encoding. 342 343 42. For now, the CIMProviderHandle and CIMBaseProviderHandle hide the 386 differences from providers, so older providers will continue to function. 387 However, this means that clients can not yet take advantage of the added 388 functionality. 389 390 When the provider API is updated, the following changes will be visible: 391 392 - Providers will get a PropertyList parameter to ModifyInstance which 393 they are required to respect. Clients can take advantage of this change by 396 issuing a ModifyInstance request against a selected set of 397 properties in an instance, rather than being required to replace 398 the entire instance. 399 400 - Providers will be required to return instance names along with 401 instances in the EnumerateInstances method. To register the 467 repository as an instance provider for a class, add a 468 'Provider("repository")' qualifier to the class definition. 469 470 51.
