This change involves the addition 227 of PARAMTYPE attributes to PARAMVALUE and RETURNVALUE tags. This tag 228 allows the server to determine the type of a parameter value without 229 having to look up the method definition in the schema. It also allows 230 the client API to do the same for output parameters as well as return 231 values. 232 233 PROVIDER IMPLICATIONS: 234 235 Method providers ARE affected by this change. Previously, all input 236 parameters to invokeMethod were sent to the provider as String type 237 regardless of what the client actually specified or how the method 238 was defined. With this change, providers will now receive input 239 parameters of the type that was actually specified by the client 240 application (regardless of how the method was defined in the schema). 241 242 However, parameters coming from clients other than the Pegasus client 243 API may omit the PARAMTYPE attribute. In this case, the operation 244 processor (currently dispatcher) will find these "typeless" parameters 245 and convert them to the correct type based on the method definition. 246 kumpf 1.68 The result is that if the client specifies the parameter type in the 247 XML encoding (as the Pegasus client API does), the method provider 248 will receive the type specified by the client; if the client does not 249 specify the parameter type, the method provider will see the type 250 specified in the method definition. 251 252 CLIENT IMPLICATIONS: 253 254 Clients ARE affected by this change. Any output parameters that are 255 returned from Pegasus (or other CIM servers using the PARAMTYPE 256 attribute) will now be received by Pegasus clients as the same type 257 sent by the server. Previously, they would have always been of 258 String type. In addition, the return value will be received as the 259 correct type rather than as a String. 260 261 Parameters coming from servers other than Pegasus may omit the 262 PARAMTYPE attribute. In this case, the client will see a 263 CIMParamValue with type==CIMType::NONE, with a CIMValue of type 264 String. Similarly, return values coming from other servers that omit 265 PARAMTYPE will be seen by the client as String type. These return 266 values will NOT have the CIMType::NONE hint that parameters get, 267 kumpf 1.68 because they are CIMValues rather than CIMParamValues. 268 269 This behavior will remain for the forseeable future (through 270 Pegasus version 2), as it is not possible to require that other 271 implementations use the PARAMTYPE attribute. 272 273 SIDE EFFECTS: 274 275 In the process of implementing this functionality, I discovered 276 that there was no way to set a CIMValue to be an array of 277 CIMReferences. This appeared to be an oversight, since method 278 parameters are permitted to be arrays of CIMReferences. I've 279 added the necessary functionality to the CIMValue class. 280 281 I also found that the CIMParamValue class needed significant 282 clean-up, which I completed. 283 284 SETPROPERTY CHANGES: 285 286 A similar problem in SetProperty operations was addressed by 287 "typing" the specified property value in the operation processor 288 kumpf 1.68 (currently dispatcher). This is achieved by looking up the 289 relevant schema to get the property definition, and then converting 290 the specified value to that property's type. 291 292 The SetProperty operation encoding has not changed to accomodate 293 inclusion of type information that would obviate the need for this 294 extra processing. However, clients can avoid this overhead by using 295 ModifyInstance operations (with a property list) instead of SetProperty. 296 297 The GetProperty operation also has NOT been updated with type 298 information. Client applications using the Pegasus client API will 299 always receive String or reference values when calling GetProperty 300 against any server (Pegasus or not). Clients that require properties 301 to be returned as the correct type must use GetInstance (perhaps with 302 a property list) rather than GetProperty. 303

Now, instead of having a method at 344 each level that adds a begin tag, contents, and an end tag, there 345 are separate methods to add the begin and end tags. At the top 346 level, each of the begin tag methods are called, then the message 347 "body" is added, followed by calls to the end tag methods. 348 349 The message body is currently still copied twice, once into the XML 350 payload and then again when the HTTP header is added. (Since the 351 HTTP header contains a content length field, the header cannot be 352 constructed until the payload is complete.) It is possible to 353 remove these extra copies as well, but that would require additional 354 changes elsewhere in the code. For example, the HTTPMessage class 355 would need to hold the headers and payload separately rather than in 356 a single buffer. 357 358 Along with these changes, I did a lot of cleanup. Much of the XML 359 formatting code has been moved from CIMReference to XmlWriter. Also, 360 error message formatting has been consolidated in XmlWriter from the 361 various encoders and decoders, etc. 362 kumpf 1.75 363 20.
